Words can’t describe the horror you feel when you first discover that your home, furniture and possessions have been damaged by water from leaking plumbing, rain penetration or actual flooding. Tapco HomeDry knows only too well the distress and confusion you first feel but with over 45 years of experience dealing with water damage all of London and all of the Home Counties and are here to help you.
IMMEDIATE MEASURES TO BE TAKEN.
It is very important that the first thing you do is to turn off the water and electricity supply, locate the leak and immediately have it repaired. You should then notify your insurance company and call Tapco HomeDry to instruct us to send a qualified timber and damp surveyor to report on the extent of the damage. Your insurance company will ask for a detailed report on what restoration work and preservation treatment is required and how much this will cost so it is best to get this done as soon as possible.
Wet carpets, furniture and other items should be removed and specialist drying equipment installed as soon as possible. Unfortunately when timbers, fitted units and furniture become saturated there are often secondary problems with shrinkage so all of this has to be taken into consideration when carrying out the drying and restoration work. In a worst case scenario dry rot may occur, this should be avoided at all cost (It is unlikely that timber decay will occur if the restoration work is carried out thoroughly without delay).
WHAT IS INVOLVED WHEN CARRYING OUT WATER DAMAGE RESTORATION WORK?
Although every case is different, often the restoration work is disruptive. Saturated plaster, especially on timber stud partition walls and ceilings may have to be removed. Kitchen units, bathroom units, joinery timbers and timber floors may also have to be removed prior to carrying out preservation treatment to the remaining surrounding areas. Once all the affected areas are dry, the walls can be replastered in accordance with Tapco’s damp proofing specification and all the damaged items can be replaced prior to redecorating.
WHAT ARE THE MOST COMMON CAUSES OF WATER DAMAGE?
The most common causes of water damage are leaking plumbing, burst pipes, leaking roofs, general poor maintenance or actual flooding. Damage caused by poor maintenance can be avoided so periodic checks and repairs are very important.
The restoration work will be insured and we will work closely with your insurance company to ensure we get you back to normal as quickly as possible.
