As the price of property continues to soar, it makes so much sense to utilise whatever space you have to hand in your existing home. For home owners, making the best use of every square metre of space will not only allow you to create a favourite room for you and your family to enjoy, but also get you a very good return for your investment. Instead of converting upwards where planning permission and controlling temperature could be difficult, take a look below your feet and see what can be done about turning that damp and dark underground space into something dry, light and habitable. Perhaps you have bought a property with an existing basement space but it is damp and uninhabitable, well we have the solution to transform it into a room you love.
Solutions for Damp Proofing Basements
The Cavity Drain Membrane (CDM) System: This system of damp proof below ground has fast become the most popular method of converting a damp dull Basement or Cellar into the perfect living space. We install high density polyethylene (HDPE) studded membranes to the walls, floors or ceilings, using special waterproof fixings and joints. Depending on what membrane we use it will either be dry-lined or plastered directly onto, using a hard-wall plaster. The system will include drainage channels under the floor membrane and will require either a natural drainage outlet or a purpose-made sump chamber and pump that will enable moisture to be controlled behind the membrane and be diverted into the sump and then pumped out to a drainage area designated by us. The system is clean, warm, quick to install and will last for many years to come.
The newly installed Cavity Drain Membrane System (CDMs) can either be specially framed and dry lined, or plastered directly onto to, to create a new, dry, warm living space. The type of membrane (dry line or plaster) we use will need to be decided prior to the installation.
Cavity Drain Membranes (CDMs) are not designed to block water ingress but to allow it in and control it. They work by installing the special studded membranes against the walls and floors, which form a permanent drainage cavity between the damp structure and the dry waterproofed interior. Along with drainage channels, this allows us to control where we want the water to go and how we dispose of it. Any amount of water is allowed to enter the formed cavity, discharge behind the studded membrane and then be collected in a drainage facility or our sump chamber before being diverted or pumped out, away from the property.

The Structural Water Proofing System (Tanking): This is carried out by applying separate coats of a cementitious structural waterproofing system to prevent lateral damp from penetrating through a wall under hydrostatic pressure. All walls that are below ground, or earth retaining structures are susceptible to Lateral Damp Penetration which can only be prevented by installing a Structural Water Proofing System (Tanking) or a Cavity Drain Membrane (CDM) system to the internal wall surfaces, which should be linked to an effective damp proof course in the floor, using a floor/wall joint. This will achieve a continuous impervious system that will then last for many years to come..
The Tapco HomeDry structural waterproofing, tanking, system consists of special waterproof cementitious slurry coats which prevent water penetration and resist hydrostatic pressure – where water is penetrating from external sources.

High Density Water Barriers: These are typically used when a building is under construction to provide a strong, long lasting water and water vapour barrier in all forms of construction, particularly where new walls are being constructed below the ground level.
Typical installations include walls constructed below ground, retaining walls and similar surfaces. A special primer is applied to the membrane by our operatives to ensure adhesion.
When applied by Tapco HomeDry, the system is capable of providing levels of protection for Grades 1, 2 & 3 basements.
