The difference between wet rot and dry rot

These are not caused by the same type of fungus and are very different in the damage they cause and the necessary conditions to enable it to spread. Despite the name, dry rot does require moisture levels of around 20% in order to thrive, whereas wet rot requires moisture levels of around 50%. Both can cause extensive damage to your property when left untreated. You don’t need to know the cause of the problem to act.

What is dry rot?

This is a kind of fungus that typically thrives on damp forest floors and helps to clear the ground of fallen trees. It spreads enzymes that digest the tree material, leaving behind a brittle and dark wood that will break down much more easily. While dry rot is most at home on the forest floor, it can also be found in your home if the conditions are right.

In the early stages of growth, you might see a furry white growth on wood that looks harmless. As it spreads, it will develop a rusty orange bloom that allows it to spread throughout your home. Dry rot can find its way through the masonry to find suitable wood.

Once the dry rot has passed through the wood, it will leave behind a dark and brittle material that is incredibly fragile. It will crumble between your fingers and it could impact the structural integrity of a home.

We most commonly see dry rot in older properties with timber frames, but it can appear in any home with wood that hasn’t been treated against dry rot. Once the conditions are right, it can spread easily, attacking door frames, floorboards and skirting boards.

You might spot a furry white growth on the wood or masonry in your home. When it blooms, it will turn a rusty orange colour. Wood left behind by dry rot will be dark and brittle and will have distinct cuboidal cracks. This causes it to crumble into small cube shapes. If you can’t see the rot, you might be able to smell the distinct earthy and musty odour.

Next, we will address the damage and restore structures so that you don’t face further issues with your home. We will usually recommend pre-treated wood to prevent a recurrence.
